Ruth Rogers Clausen Deer Resistant Natives ClassRuth Rogers Clausen

Deer browsing has become one of the major problems deterring gardeners from growing ornamentals of all kinds. Choosing plants that deer find unpalatable is perhaps the best defense against browsing, without depending on expensive fences or regular spraying with deer deterrents. This talk highlights some native perennials that deer do not find appealing. Tips and tricks that make your garden less inviting to your local herd are also discussed. Although there is no such thing as a "deer-proof" garden in deer country, there are lots of natives to decorate your property. Learn how to make it deer tolerant rather than fighting nature to protect your landscape.

Ruth Rogers Clausen was trained in horticulture in the United Kingdom and has now been in the green industry for more than fifty years, primarily based in the Midwest and the Northeast. She has taught and written extensively about perennials, bulbs, garden design, and other horticultural topics.  Her books include Perennials for American Gardens (coauthored with Nicolas H. Ekstrom), Dreamscaping, 50 Beautiful Deer-Resistant Plants, and Essential Perennials (coauthored with Thomas Christopher).  Ruth was horticulture editor for Country Living Gardener for more than seven years.  She travels extensively and serves as a judge of show gardens in major flower shows in the United States and abroad. Ruth practices her craft in Easton, Maryland.
