Do you have an insect or disease attacking your plant? The University of Delaware has a great diagnostic clinic where you can mail your sample to them to diagnose it.

Click here for the Delaware Plant Diagnostic Form Nov2014 (click blue type to download) that should accompany any sample, with information filled in as completely as possible. A copy of the sample submission form may be downloaded and printed from this site. Many homeowner samples may not need to be sent to the Clinic, but may be diagnosed by Master Gardeners or County Agents in the county Extension offices.

New! Here are some helpful hints and suggestions to help all of us to accurately and quickly diagnose plant disease and insect samples that come in.

  1. If a sample consists of just one or two leaves of an unknown plant or a dead brown branch, we probably will not be able to tell much.  Please request a new sample from the client.
  2. Samples should be placed in a ziplock plastic bag.  Samples in open plastic bags from grocery stores or paper are usually too dry by the time they get to Newark.
  3. Wet, soft fruits or vegetables should be placed in dry paper towels and then double bagged in case they break down and leak.
  4. Turfgrass samples should contain a margin between healthy and diseased, and should be a section of turf with a bit of soil underneath (4 x 4 inches is good). Plastic containers such as butter tubs or for left-overs work well as containers.
  5. Anything sprayed with a pesticide should not be sampled and sent for at least 24 hours.
  6. Insect identifications can be made from plants, household, or foundation habitats.  Anything from a human body is not appropriate to send to Newark, and should be sent to the Department of Health.
  7. Information filled in on the forms can be very helpful. Remember, this work is like doing a jigsaw puzzle.  The more pieces we have, the easier it is to complete!
Thank you for contacting East Coast Garden Center! We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Cordrey Charity logo

Mission Statement: Cordrey Charities is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and sharing the joys and rewards of gardening and living among plants with all members of our community. We do this by providing education, motivation, and inspiration through classroom programs, gardening classes and demonstrations, guest speakers, the creation of healing gardens, and other projects and programs. We are also committed to helping our community better understand the direct relationship between a healthy lifestyle and the incorporation of plants in one’s life. Our fund is supported by fundraising efforts, grants, and donations and will help develop the gardens of tomorrow by teaching gardeners today.

Cordrey Charities' first program has been very successful and is ongoing and expanding! We have been working with 2nd grade teachers at Millsboro Elementary School where we gave each 2nd grader an aloe plant and information about caring for their plants along with information about all of the uses of aloe in our everyday lives. The students were responsible for taking care of their plants and attended a special assembly this spring where prizes were awarded to students whose plants fared well throughout the winter. We are currently in the process of planning an expansion of the program into schools throughout Sussex County.

Valery, Rick, and Steve Cordrey launched RSC Landscaping in 1990. After years of not being able to find unique plant selections locally, the family decided to create their own growing division and garden center to fill the void. They wanted to have a large assortment of plants available for their landscaping projects and in addition, offer them to homeowners and wholesalers who were also searching for high quality, unique plants.

East Coast Garden Center, located in Millsboro, DE, has more than 70 greenhouses and works to bring in plant material from around the country to ensure they have the newest plants in the area. It was always Valery Cordrey's dream to turn the garden center into a destination with display gardens to inspire customers. Facilitating classes allows customers to be enriched with education of new skills and techniques. Moreover, this coupled with the opportunity to relax in the garden continually inspires customers.

Creating the Cordrey Center, a houseplant showroom, and the Enrichment Center, a place to hold classes, and expanding the Children's Garden area, are additional steps that create an amazing destination location. Whether a person is looking for the perfect plant, landscape materials and services, or just a place to walk around and enjoy the beautiful scenery, East Coast Garden Center has it all.

RSC Landscaping offers seasonal recurring maintenance for our customers in Sussex County and the surrounding areas. Our maintenance crew will visit your property at regular intervals and remove weeds, trim shrubbery as needed, edge beds, and keep up the appearance of your landscape.

Additionally, we perform regular Round-up and pre-emergent weed control applications to cut down on maintenance costs. Two Seasons of Color

One of the most spectacular and property enhancing services we offer is our Two Seasons of Color program. For the Two Seasons of Color program, we plant annual flowers in the flowerbeds around your home to give your property a level of color and curb appeal that cannot be achieved with shrubbery alone.

In the spring, our crew will plant an assortment of summer annuals that are suited to the conditions in your yard. When the growing season comes to an end and fall approaches, the summer annuals are replaced with winter pansies which will bloom throughout the winter into spring. The following spring, the pansies are removed and the process is repeated.

We also offer this program for your outdoor decorative pots and container gardens. This program is called "Four Seasons of Color". Our skilled container garden designers can create colorful, beautiful displays for your decks, patios, or hardscape areas for year-round beautification . Call us or visit the garden center to talk with one of our designers about our Two Seasons of Color Program or the Four Seasons of Color Program.

One of the main programs we offer at RSC Landscaping is our lawn care and fertilization service. This service is designed to keep your lawn lush and green while preventing unwanted weeds and diseases. The process consists of four granular applications of fertilizer, with the first two containing a pre-emergent weed control which helps prevent crabgrass and other annual weeds in the lawn. Additionally, early summer applications of post-emergent yellow nutsedge and broadleaf weed control are available and are recommended as part of a comprehensive lawn care package.

Also, as an elective service, granular applications of grub control, fungicide, and lime are available during the season. All of these treatments work together to keep your lawn looking stately and manicured. Call 302-945-5853 to find out what we can do for your lawn this season.

We will install a new system or add on to an existing system, regardless of what brand you are currently using. Lawns, planting beds, and decorative pots are only a few of the landscape features that we can set up to water automatically for your property.

We also install low voltage landscape lighting that will enhance the beauty and security of your home. Using high quality Vista light fixtures and Vista recommended lighting techniques, we can accent the beauty of your home and landscaping at night.
